Public library services to refugees and asylum seekers in the North East

The Northern Chief Librarians Multi-Cultural Group (NCL-MCG), in seeking to develop services to ethnic minorities, specifically refugees and asylum-seekers, has drawn up a research brief to enable its existing provision to be described, the work of complementary agencies in the area to be mapped and suggestions to be made as to its future framework and activity.

CIRT has been funded by the North East Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (NEMLAC) to support this work via research which will:

  • provide an overview of existing public agency, voluntary organisation and self-initiative services for black minority and ethnic (BME) communities, specifically asylum seekers and refugees, within the region
  • provide an overview of the existing and projected demographic profile of asylum seekers and refugees within the region
  • provide an overview of existing nationwide library services for the target group, highlighting examples of good practice
  • conduct a needs analysis of the identified communities in respect of library provision in the region
  • assess training provision and need in public libraries relating to the target group
  • make recommendations to the public library sector and other cultural domains in NEMLAC as to future provision, including potential partnerships
  • provide a framework of guidance and practical examples for use by NEMLAC in its constituent libraries and beyond.
