YOUNG BOOK TRUST RESEARCH: RESPONDING TO THE BOOK INFORMATION NEEDS OF STUDENTS, TUTORS AND LECTURERS IN FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION

The project was funded by the Arts Council of England and consisted of an investigation of the needs of students, tutors and lecturers in further education (FE) and higher education (HE) for children's book information to support their study. The research was conducted over an eight month period, completing in October 1996. Focus Groups of tutors and lecturers in FE and HE were used to analyse their own and their students' needs for children's book information. The Focus Groups were also used to elicit information on current use of children's literature resources, including the use made of the Young Book Trust (YBT). They also gathered information on perceived needs for information on children's literature, responses to the range of services provided by YBT and acceptable levels of fees to be charged for services.

The main recommendations of the report include the need for YBT to develop a publicity strategy promoting current services of use to FE and HE and also any new services introduced as a result of this report. Other recommendations include the need to develop a cheap subscription pack for students of children's literature in both FE and HE. Finally, the need to provide desktop access to a range of children's book information necessitates YBT conducting a feasibility study for mounting their current database on the Internet.
