Review of Preservation Management Training in the UK and abroad (for Traditional Materials)
This six-month project (September 1999 - February 2000) was funded by the Library and Information Commission under its "Preservation of and access to the recorded heritage" programme. The National Preservation Office (NPO) played a key role in the project and was represented on the Advisory panel. The project identified and reviewed current preservation management training for traditional materials in libraries and archives in the UK and abroad. This was achieved by contact with a wide range of organisations in different sectors in the UK and overseas and by searching of appropriate web sites and printed sources. Deliverables included a database of trainers and training materials (now with the NPO), and a report which provided a full literature review of preservation management training in the UK, including a draft list of skills for preservation managers.
The authors of the Review conclude that training in the area of preservation is still principally about awareness rather than management. They make recommendations to move training forward which involve the NPO, the Library Association and Resource: the Council for Museums, Libraries and Archives, and propose a second phase of the review to build on the draft skills list.
