SMSMA Scheme Evaluation
CIRT secured £8,300 to evaluate the Sharing Museums Skills Millennium Awards Scheme (SMSMA scheme), and submitted a report to Resource in March 2002. An executive summary and case study information are available on the Resource web site as follows:
www.resource.gov.uk/documents/cirtrep.pdf
The scheme enabled workers, originally in museums, but latterly also in libraries and archives, to be seconded to other institutions for 3 to 8 weeks in order to develop their particular expertise in a new environment and with a different user community.
The evaluation was a requirement of the scheme's funding by the Millennium Commission. The CIRT team sought the views of stakeholders via a questionnaire and undertook eight case studies a cross a range of projects which received an award from the scheme, in order to elicit the views of seconding and host institutions, as well as the secondees and the communities they were aiming to serve in their secondment. The evidence attested to the good value of the Scheme, which will be continuing at least on a short-term basis.
