Impact research: Worcestershire Health Informatics Programme

This project addressed the requirement from the West Midlands South Workforce Development Confederation of the National Health Service (NHS) to conduct research into the impact of its Libraries and Access to Evidence Project (LAEP).

The LAEP programme forms part of the Worcestershire Health Informatics Programme (WHIP), designed to deliver the local implementation of the national strategy outlined in Information for Health. The key focus of the WHIP programme is to improve access to:

  • Information and evidence.
  • Up-to-date research.
  • Continuing professional development resources for clinical staff.

The LAEP consists of six sub-projects designed to deliver these resources and services to staff across the county. CIRT’s role was to investigate the impact of the initial work carried out in the Libraries and Access to Evidence Project and to explore future directions and developments for the Project. Within these two overall aims, the project had five objectives:

  1. To assess the impact of the services developed to date under the LAEP, on users’ perceptions, attitudes and use of information.
  2. To explore the impact of LAEP on staff use of information sources in informing and supporting their work.
  3. To identify examples of good practice and areas of concern within the initial LAEP sub-projects.
  4. To identify future needs and expectations from the LAEP sub-projects.
  5. To identify future developments and directions for individual sub-projects and for the Project as a whole.

A final report (details below) was produced by CIRT and presented to the WHIP steering group in December 2002.
